Posdoctoral position at UFSC (Brazil)

#1 Unread post by antoniofetter »

Position Description
Position title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Physical Oceanography and Climate.
Fellowship: R$ 10,318.00 (ten thousand three hundred and eighteen reais) per month.
Workload: full-time dedication.
Workplace: Ocean Dynamics Laboratory, UFSC, Florianópolis, SC, Brazil.
Start date: immediately after the conclusion of the selection process (negotiable).
Project duration: 3 years.
Number of positions: 01.
Application deadline: November 30, 2025.

Position Details
The project aims to develop an ocean modeling methodology with data assimilation capable of accurately reproducing the mean state, intra-seasonal to seasonal variability, and extremes of ocean circulation in the Campos Basin, with emphasis on near-bottom currents in the shelf-break and continental slope regions.
The selected candidate will be responsible for three-dimensional circulation modeling in the Campos Basin using ROMS, focusing on the representation of bottom currents. Activities include the implementation of high-resolution nested grids, the introduction of modifications to the vertical coordinate system (VQS), testing different bottom friction parameterizations that allow the model to reproduce current extremes comparable to observations, and conducting both free runs and data assimilation experiments. The goal is to establish a robust methodology to faithfully simulate bottom circulation in the region.

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with a strong academic profile and experience in numerical ocean modeling. The candidate is expected to demonstrate:
    initiative in solving scientific and computational problems;
      academic productivity;
        experience with ROMS or similar numerical ocean circulation models;
          familiarity with data assimilation and optimal interpolation;
            programming skills (preferably Fortran, Python, or MATLAB).

            Qualifications
            PhD in Physical Oceanography, Meteorology, Statistics, or related field.

            Application Documents
            CV (Lattes for Brazilian applicants, or equivalent for international applicants);
            A short cover letter describing relevant experience and how it can contribute to the development of the project.

            Recommendations
            Provide the contact information of two researchers you have previously worked with.
