Literature suggestions on spurious watermass transformation caused by PGE

#1 Unread post by stef »

Hi,

In some of my experiments I noticed that the average vertical profile drifts away from the climatology, particularly in the thermocline.

I think that a large part of this is caused by the pressure gradient error, because certain measures like smoothing the topography and adjusting the vertical coordinate stretching have a large effect.

Now I'm trying to find literature on the pressure gradient error, but specifically on the long-term effect of PGE on watermasses. Most of the papers I've found focus on the EKE and circulation (velocity), which I think makes sense given that the root of the problem is in the momentum equations.

Are there any papers looking in depth at salinity/temperature/density specifically?

I'm interested in this because I want to assimilate vertical temperature and salinity profiles, and I would like to improve the model without assimilation first.
