University of Hawaii, School of Ocean and Earth Science Technology (SOEST), Postdoctoral Scholar.

SOEST at the University of Hawai`i in Manoa seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to explore and research the circulation on the western slope of the island of O'ahu with a focus on data assimilation and adjoint techniques. Utilizing nested assimilated models with a coordinated field campaigns, we will explore the circulation processes that influence the small-scale, nearshore environment that provides a means for on-shore transport. The project will utilize adjoint-based sensitivity and four-dimensional variational data assimilation within the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). Further research into the influence of these physical processes on the biology of the region will be encouraged. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team working on similar issues and research.

Minimum Qualifications include: Ph.D. or equivalent in physical oceanography, ocean engineering, or related field, ability to work well independently as part of a team, and strong communication skills both verbal and written. Preferred candidates will have experience with ROMS or other numerical models, strong mathematical and computational skills with background in physical processes, and are motivated to drive new developments in data assimilation within numerical modeling.

The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of extension contingent upon performance and funding. Stipend is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Electronic applications containing 1) curriculum vitae; (2) one-page statement of research interests; (3) contact information for 3 references to powellb@hawaii.edu. Email verification will be sent upon receipt of your application, please inquire if receipt is not received. For more information, please contact Dr. Brian Powell (powellb@hawaii.edu; 808-956-6724).
