UWA Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) PhD Scholarship:
Physical oceanographic processes off North West Cape, Australia
Coastal observations include a variety of tools, both traditional and novel, such as satellites, moored instruments, shore-based systems, and remotely operated vehicles. The Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) is a national collaborative research infrastructure, supported by the Australian Government, which undertakes sustained observations of the oceans and coastal regions around Australia. The University of Western Australia hosts two of the IMOS coastal observing infrastructure: HF radar for surface current measurements and autonomous ocean gliders for subsurface water properties. With co-funding from the West Australian (WA) State Government and Woodside Ltd, new infrastructure is being deployed off the North West Cape in northern Western Australia. This includes HF Radar, ocean glider transects and oceanographic moorings. The University of Western Australia hosts the IMOS Ocean Glider and HF Radar facilities have access to high performance computing at the Pawsey Centre. This PhD project will primarily be concerned with the analysis of the integrated data sets in addition to developing numerical models (ROMS) with data assimilation. As one of the most complex oceanographic regions around Australia with a complex topography including the Ningaloo coral reef, a strong seasonal cycle, convergence of ocean currents and the initiation region of the Leeuwin Current, this project will be highly challenging as well as satisfying.
The scholarship is fully funded and includes an annual stipend of AUD$ 30000, tuition fee waiver for international applicants. The scholarship is available for Australian and New Zealand citizens and permanent residents as well as international applicants. Research project costs, estimated to be much higher than AUD 1 million has been secured already.
