wind work

#1 Unread post by fcampos »

Hello!!!
I want compute the wind work, similar to Equations 5 and 6 of Marcheisello et al., 2003. But I do not understand well. The FmKm is computed using barotropic velocity or exist other form?. Can you help me please?

Thank you very much

In this paper:

MacCready, P., and S. N. Giddings, 2016: The Mechanical Energy Budget of a Regional Ocean Model. J. Phys. Oceanogr., 46, JPO-D-16-0086.1, doi:10.1175/JPO-D-16-0086.1

(available by open access) we calculated the "geostrophic wind work" in Fig 10, and the method of calculation is discussed on p. 2731. It is basically the surface geostrophic velocity times wind stress. The reason for using the geostrophic velocity is that much of the wind work goes directly into dissipation in the surface boundary layer, but some goes into forcing aspects of the large scale flow - like increasing the APE of the fluid through wind-driven upwelling. We were only interested in the latter part.
