ROMS-SWAn wave-current interactions

#1 Unread post by jacopo »

This post is primarily targeted on those of you using SWAN, but since it is associated to ROMS/SWAN wave-current interactions, I think is a good idea to post this here.

Digging the SWAN forum, I found an interesting post by Rogers (with reply by John) about the use of curvilinear grids in SWAN

http://130.161.13.149/swan/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=296

As John said in his reply, "we see huge erroneous spouts of wave energy developing at random locations for no apparent reason. Then we are coupling SWAN to ROMS and these wave energy hot spots drive tremendous unrealistic nearshore currents."

It seems to me that this issue has not been fixed (up to SWAN v. 40.72). I have been seeing these "erroneous spouts" in all my ROMS/SWAN applications (w/ curvilinear grids). In some cases, this prevents reliable wave-current interactions.

Any of you found workarounds for this problem (in addition Rogers' fixes)?

We have tried to use
SET PWTAIL 5
and this seems to help, in addition to the Rogers fix.
