when I run the latest version of roms ,I had the following problem:
oceanO: string.c:177: NC_check_name: Assertion `name != ((void *)0)' failed.

It is very likely that you did not updated varinfo.dat for your application. New metadata variables were added for diagnostic variables. This is always documented as a warning in the trac tickets.
