We are currently seeking an experienced Research and Development Manager to head up our MetOcean R&D team. MetOcean Solutions, a division of New Zealand’s MetService, is a science-based consultancy and forecast supplier providing specialist numerical modelling and analytical solutions in meteorology and oceanography. With offices across New Zealand (Auckland, New Plymouth, Raglan, and Wellington) and in Sydney, Australia (MetraWeather) our international team works on projects and data analysis world-wide. We passionately believe in rigorous scientific method and in applying the latest information technology to data services. MetOcean occupies several niche marine consultancy and service roles and has a rapidly growing forecast and hindcast sector.

You will bring experience in mentoring and managing a team of highly qualified and passionate people who conduct research and development. You will be leading and participating in the development, maintenance and monitoring of the operational forecasting system and contributing to the establishment and maintenance of CI and CD procedures.

Our employees enjoy an open-office, upbeat culture within a coastal town environment in the North Island of New Zealand. This position would be primarily based in Raglan with some opportunity to work from other offices in the future. Raglan is a small beach side town on the West Coast, just a short drive west of Hamilton or a two-hour drive south of Auckland. It is known for its world-class surf, stunning scenery, beautiful beaches and inspiring arts.

You must have a post-graduate qualification (M.Sc. or PhD.) in a relevant physical science or related field, 10+ years’ experience, a sound understanding of the principles of numerical oceanographic modelling and a proven track record in managing and working with high performing teams.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential:

● A postgraduate qualification (M.Sc. or PhD. level) in a relevant physical science with either or both industry and institutional experience (10+ years)
● A sound understanding of the principles of numerical oceanographic modelling (waves and/or hydrodynamics) and their application to operational forecasting and hindcasting
● A proven track record in managing and working with high performing teams
● Constructively relates to a wide range of people with open-mindedness and good-will
● Ability to enthuse staff and align their efforts with company strategy and policy
● Experience working in a Linux HPC environment
● Strong technical and scientific report writing skills in English, with the ability to communicate complex science to a range of audiences
● Ability to plan and manage a budget
● High level of attention to detail
● Effective decision-making skills
● Methodical and logical approach to problem solving

Desirable:

● Doctorate level studies in oceanography, with an established publication record
● Familiarity with international meteorological (including WMO), oceanographic and science organizations and standards
● Development experience in WAVEWATCH III
● An interest in climate change modelling
● Experience with scientific data analysis and software development
● Involvement in an operational forecasting environment
● General programming ability, including proficiency in Python
● Familiar with modern software development practices (e.g. DevOps)
