We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Associate to investigate how waves, turbulence, and flow-induced larval behavior affect larval transport in the Middle Atlantic Bight and adjacent estuaries. Waves and turbulence induce behavioral responses that alter larval vertical distributions and may enable larvae to be retained near natal habitats. However, wave-induced behaviors may also be responsible for observed, counterintuitive shifts of shelf species into warmer water. An NSF-funded project will use hydrodynamic models (ROMS and SWAN) and virtual larvae in a particle tracking model (LTRANS) to test hypotheses about mechanisms of larval transport, retention, and climate change-induced range shifts. This project uses ocean physics to address ecological questions and is a collaborative effort between biological and physical oceanographers at Rutgers University and Skidmore College.

The Postdoctoral Associate will work at Rutgers with Heidi Fuchs (Rutgers), Greg Gerbi (Skidmore), Bob Chant (Rutgers), and John Wilkin (Rutgers) beginning in fall of 2019. Funding and university benefits are guaranteed for one year and may be renewed for a second year with satisfactory progress and contingent upon funding.

Required qualifications include a PhD in biological or physical oceanography or a related field as of August 2019, relevant coursework or expertise in mathematics and physics, experience with at least one scientific programming language (e.g., Matlab, Python, or Fortran), and evidence of progress towards publication in peer-reviewed literature.

Applicants should apply directly through the job-posting link (https://jobs.rutgers.edu/postings/79892), and attach their curriculum vitae, a statement of research experience and interests, and the names and email address of three references. Transcripts may also be submitted as necessary to demonstrate that the applicant has relevant background.

Review of applications will begin January 15, 2019. Applicants are encouraged to apply concurrently for a Postdoctoral Assistantship in the Rutgers Institute of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (https://eoas.rutgers.edu/postdoctoral-program/). An equal opportunity employer, Rutgers University is committed to building a diverse community and encourages applications from women and minority candidates.
