Position for ocean modeller at NoLogin

NoLogin offers a 28-months full-time position (associated to R&D project related to CMEMS) at Madrid (Puertos del Estado facilities, Spain) for an expert in ocean modelling.

Work Description:

Nologin Consulting is a Spanish company established in the year 2000 that actively works with companies around the world to help them protect, store, manage, organize, and maintain their most prized IT assets: information. We help companies and service providers design, implement and evolve their technological infrastructure as their businesses grow.

Together with our global partner network, we share one common goal: to help our customers achieve their desired goals.

The candidate will work in the framework of CMEMS (Copernicus Marine Environmental Monitoring Service), and more specifically in its regional component IBI-MFC (the Monitoring and Forecasting Centre for the Iberian-Biscay-Ireland area) in close collaboration with Puertos del Estado and Mercator Ocean International. Currently (during CMEMS Phase-2), NoLogin is responsible of the IBI-MFC operational activities, as well as for the transition into operations of any upgraded model system.

He/she will conduct part of the required research in ocean modelling aimed at improving regional and coastal performance of NEMO model in operational applications on European Atlantic shelves.

The scientific expert will help to evolve the IBI operational application, including R&D activities related to develop model sensitivity tests with the NEMO-based IBI physical forecast application. Some of the tests, to be leaded by the candidate, will be focused on improving the barotropic solution of the IBI physical forecast system (so, the candidate should be ready to design and perform different NEMO model tests to evaluate the impact of updated model bathymetry, a new tidal forcing or modifications on the open boundary conditions).

Any new test model solution generated should be compared with the present IBI operational product (the reference solution) to evaluate the potential added value of the tested model novelty.

Therefore, the selected candidate will develop part of his/her activity on qualifying the resulting model datasets. For this validation activities, the use of Earth Observations and in-situ observational data sources arises as a major issue. Since the use of present IBI-MFC validation tool (i.e. NARVAL tool) will be required, the model researcher will collaborate with the IBI-MFC ProductQuality Team.

Finally, if benefit of the tested novelties is demonstrated, the candidate will participate in the process of transitioning it into operations. The candidate’s role will consist on providing technical support to the IBI-MFC operational Team to ease the process required to build the next release of the IBI ocean forecast service.

Qualifications/experience:

The ideal candidate should have a relevant degree (PhD positively valued) in physics/meteorology/oceanography or other closely-related discipline (i.e. coastal or maritime engineering) with experience in ocean modelling (ideally with the NEMO model) and good programming skills (including languages such as Fortran, python and shell scripting). Good English language skills. Fluency in Spanish also valued.

Finally, a strong interest in performing R&D activities, closely linked to the evolution of operational forecast services is desirable. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a highly multidisciplinary environment such as the CMEMS IBI-MFC, in close collaboration with staff, related not only to R&D in ocean modelling and data assimilation, but also with the Operational and Service IBI-MFC Teams.
