The Institute of Marine Sciences (https://ims.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in collaboration with Drs. Steven Bograd, Elliott Hazen, and Mike Jacox of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Services, seek one or more Assistant / Associate Project Scientist(s) (Ecologist or Oceanographer) to help with ongoing projects (i) analyzing top predator data, (ii) analyzing oceanographic datasets in support of fisheries management, (iii) synthesizing ecosystem data in support of Integrated Ecosystem Assessments, and/or (iv) running and analyzing ocean/ecosystem models for historical, near-real-time, seasonal forecasting, and climate projection applications. The position(s) will be based at the NOAA/SWFSC laboratory in Monterey, California.

The Project Scientist(s) will initiate projects and partnerships with federal and academic collaborators, write code, perform advanced statistics and data analysis, and summarize scientific findings in the form of written manuscripts and oral presentations. Responsibilities also include serving as the primary and, in other cases, co-author on peer- reviewed manuscripts; helping write project reports for funding agencies; and co-writing grant proposals to continue existing and develop new projects that are NOAA relevant. The Project Scientist (s) will collaborate with postdoctoral researchers, students, and NOAA scientists.

Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: Experience developing and ideally leading research analyses; experience with analytical software packages (e.g. R, MatLab, ArcGIS, Python) and statistical analysis of spatial and temporal data; experience with regional ocean/ecosystem modeling (e.g., in ROMS); and/or knowledge of multivariate statistics or Bayesian statistics.

RANK: Assistant to Associate Project Scientist

SALARY: Minimum salary $55,700, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D.(or foreign equivalent degree) in Oceanography, Ecology, Biology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Studies, Statistics, or Computer Science; experience working with oceanographic and/or ecological datasets; and a demonstrated knowledge of oceanography, ecology, and/or marine ecosystem dynamics.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment
is contingent upon positive performance review and the availability of funding.
