#1 Unread post by cae »

The Department of Ocean Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz, invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Scholar to study coupled physical/biogeochemical processes within the California Current System and broader Pacific Ocean. The project involves the development of advanced biogeochemical models, investigation of appropriate methods of data assimilation for improved ocean state estimation, and analysis of model output in multiple regions.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent in ocean sciences, ecological modeling, or a related field. Strong quantitative skills and experience with numerical models and scientific programming is advantageous, particularly with Fortran and either Matlab or Python. The postdoctoral scientist will work under the supervision of Prof. Christopher Edwards and join an active group of scientists focused on a variety of ocean modeling problems at UC Santa Cruz using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). The scholar will be expected to both lead independent projects and work as part of a team. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are helpful.

Applicants should submit a one-page statement of research experience and interests, a CV, and contact information for up to three references to Prof. Christopher Edwards (cedwards@ucsc.edu).

Review of the applications will begin immediately and proceed until the position is filled.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at other institutions. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.
