Postdoctoral Research Associate - Ecosystem or Biogeochemical Modeler (id:41730)

Purpose:

To conduct research as a member of an interdisciplinary team on a multi-year, large scale project investigating the interaction between coastal dynamics and the aquaculture industry in Maine as part of the Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture Network (SEANET; http://umaine.edu/epscor/maine-epscor-programs/seanet/). We seek applicants for a highly motivated, post-doctoral researcher with a focus on ecosystem or biogeochemical modeling. The successful candidate will work closely with the rest of the team on development of hydrodynamic-biogeochemical models using the high-resolution monitoring network datasets, as well as citizen science data and historical datasets. The last two post-doctoral researchers in this position have received faculty appointments. Typical hiring range for this position is $37,000 - $45,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications. Please contact Damian Brady (damian.brady@maine.edu) for more details.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Modeling experience required (modeling experience can include process-based biogeochemical-ecological modeling or advanced empirical modeling techniques).
Develop, implement, and document QA/QC automated procedures for correction of buoy data.
Analyze data from an aquaculture growing area observation network as part of a multi-institutional team.
Work with an interdisciplinary team to explore the environmental, social, and economic implications of coastal and estuarine productivity and water quality on the aquaculture industry.
Publish journal articles with colleagues and present research at professional conferences.
Mentor students and participate in undergraduate and graduate education.
Interact with regional stakeholders (industry, government agency staff, non-government organizations).
Collaborate with various regional academic institutions, companies, and agencies.
Work effectively and cooperatively with members of the department staff, UMaine administration, the campus community, and external clients and customers.
Perform other reasonably related duties, which may include periodic field work.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:

Ph.D. in relevant scientific field required.
Expertise in ocean and estuarine observing systems.
Strong analytical skills required.
Strong written and oral communication skills are required.
Ability to conduct synthetic, high-impact research.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Will help supervise/mentor undergraduate and master’s students.



WORK YEAR: Full-time, 12 months.



POSITION TYPE: In accordance with Procedures for Appointing Postdoctoral Research Associates: initial appointment may be up to two years with renewal contingent upon funding and performance. Maximum duration of this appointment is three years.



SCHEDULE FOR EVALULATION: In the initial six months of employment and annually thereafter.
