OCEANIC MODELER

Applications are invited for a researcher position in oceanic modeling at the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at UCLA. Candidates must practice oceanic dynamical theory and modeling at least at the level of a Ph.D. The level of the appointment will be commensurate with professional experience. The scope of the job includes both investigation of fundamental processes and realistic simulation of regional and basin circulations. Examples of likely process studies are submesoscale surface fronts; mesoscale air-sea coupling; and wave-, tide-, and current-induced mixing and dissipation near the shoreline. Current focus regions are California and Humbolt Currents, Central America, Alaska, and the South China Sea. The simulation studies will be done using the innovative Regional Oceanic Modeling System (ROMS).

The research environment is collaborative among a lively group of scientists using ROMS. Applications should include a curriculum vitae, short statement of research interests, and names of at least three individuals familiar with the applicant's work. Inquiries and applications should be sent to Professor James C. McWilliams, IGPP, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1567 ( jcm@atmos.ucla.edu ); if submitted by 15 February 2007, they will receive full consideration. UCLA is an EO/AA employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
