Please see information below for a postdoc opportunity at the University of Oregon, in Eugene, OR.

Postdoctoral fellowship: Ice-Ocean Interactions / Physical Oceanography / Glaciology

Advisor: Dave Sutherland, University of Oregon (http://pages.uoregon.edu/dsuth/)

Location: Dept. of Geological Sciences, University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon

Duration: up to 2 years

Topic: Western Antarctic Peninsula Glacier-Ocean interactions

Description: The Antarctic Peninsula (AP) is the fastest-warming region in the Southern Hemisphere, with increases in air temperature coinciding with ocean warming. Observations show widespread retreat of the glaciers and ice sheets along the coast of the AP. This project is focused on understanding the processes responsible for driving the coupled ocean-glacier response along the latitudinal gradient of the western AP, using a suite of historical data and new coupled model simulations to examine several proposed mechanisms. The successful applicant will also enjoy opportunities to work on existing projects examining ice-ocean interactions in Alaska and Greenland, including the opportunity to participate in field work.

We seek a postdoctoral researcher with strong quantitative skills to undertake an investigation of the glacier response to ocean forcing in the western AP. The postdoctoral researcher will collaborate with a diverse research team from multiple institutions and utilize a wide range of techniques and data sources from both the ocean and ice realms. The successful applicant should have a PhD (by the start date) with a background in physical oceanography, glaciology, or a related-discipline. Experience with high-resolution numerical models is preferred, but not required. Applicants should have a record of good written and spoken communication skills, as well as evidence of being an independent researcher with a collaborative attitude.

To apply: Please send 1) a cover letter, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) a one-page statement describing your research background in the context of this project, and 4) the names, institutions, and email addresses for three references, to Dave Sutherland (dsuth@uoregon.edu). Review of applicants will begin on July 1, 2016, and continue until the position is filled. The successful applicant will be able to start as early as Fall 2016. The position is initially for one-year and includes support for travel and publications, with a second year contingent on progress and funding.

The setting: Located 110 miles south of Portland, the University of Oregon has an enrollment of over 25,000 students. The Eugene metro area (pop. 215,000) is in a region noted for its dynamic quality of life and progressive cultural environment. We are about an hour's drive from both the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains. The University of Oregon is an equal-opportunity, affirmative-action institution committed to cultural diversity and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Candidates who promote and enhance diversity are strongly desired. For more information, contact Professor Dave Sutherland (http://pages.uoregon.edu/dsuth/).
