Ocean modeling position at Norwegian Polar Institute

#1 Unread post by asun »

The Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø, Norway, invites applications for a Research Scientist in numerical ocean modeling. The position is funded through the project "TIGRIF: Tidewater Glacier Retreat Impact on Fjord circulation on ecosystems". The work will be conducted in our Research Department, Section of Oceans and Sea ice. The position is temporary for 3 years with a possible extension of 1 year, depending on funding.

The aim of the TIGRIF project is to improve our understanding of how ongoing retreat of fjord-terminating glaciers will impact future fjord circulation and exchanges with the ocean, and how these factors together affect the local marine ecosystem. The work will consist of setting up and running numerical fjord models with varying resolutions to cover the most important dynamical aspects of glacier-fjord interaction and fjord-ocean exchanges. Field data such as hydrography data collected by moorings, from ship and by instrumented seals, will be processed and used for evaluation and tuning of model performance. Analysis and publication of results is the ultimate product of the work.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold a Master’s or Doctor’s degree in physical oceanography or a related geophysical field, or computational mathematics/numerics. Experience with running and/or analyzing results from hydrodynamical circulation models is required. An interest in connecting physics with biogeochemistry or marine biology is an asset. Publication of results is of great importance and recent articles in highly rated peer-reviewed scientific journals must demonstrate such ability.

The position is available from 1st of April 2016. The work place is Tromsø, Norway. Tromsø is a city of 70.000 residents situated in northern Norway at nearly 70°N. Tromsø is known as a good place to experience the midnight sun, polar night, varied outdoor activities and a lively cultural and entertainment environment. It is also a major, and expanding, center for research, with numerous government and private research institutions and a major university.

The TIGRIF project will be conducted in close collaboration with the ocean modelers at the Institute of Marine Research, so we anticipate working visits to colleagues in Arendal, Bergen and Nova Scotia (Canada) during the term of the fellowship.
