Postdoctoral position in numerical ocean modelling

#1 Unread post by asun »

Dear colleagues,

please spread the word about this postdoctoral position;

The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) in Tromsø, Norway invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow position in numerical ocean modelling. The position is funded through the project “TIGRIF: Tidewater Glacier Retreat Impact on Fjord circulation and ecosystems”. The work will be conducted in our Research department, Section of Oceans and Sea Ice. The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term position for a period of 3 years with a possible extension of 1 year, depending on funding.

Work Content
The aim of the TIGRIF project is to improve our understanding of how ongoing retreat of fjord-terminating glaciers will impact future fjord circulation and exchanges with the ocean, and how these factors together affect the local marine ecosystem.

The work will consist of setting up and running numerical fjord models with varying resolutions to cover the most important dynamical aspects of glacier-fjord interaction and fjord-ocean exchanges. Field data such as hydrography data collected by moorings, from ship and by instrumented seals, will be processed and used for evaluation and tuning of model performance. Analysis and publication of results is the ultimate product of the work.

Qualifications
The candidate must hold a PhD in physical oceanography or a closely related geophysical field, or computational mathematics/numerics. The PhD must be completed and approved in order for the application to be considered.

Experience with running 3D hydro-dynamical circulation models is required, and candidates that have worked with the ROMS-model will be preferred. An interest in connecting physics with biogeochemistry or marine biology is an asset. Publication of results is of great importance and recent articles in highly rated peer-reviewed scientific journals must demonstrate such ability.

The candidate must have experience with one or more of the following tools: Matlab, Python, R. We seek a candidate with good collaboration skills, but who also can conduct independent research. Good written and spoken communication skills in English are required.

The application deadline is 21st August 2015.
