Integrated Statistics is looking for a Scientific Programmer to work with the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program at the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center in Woods Hole, MA.
USGS earth scientists explore and study many aspects of the underwater areas between shorelines and the deep ocean, investigating scientific processes related to societal problems arising in coastal and marine environments, including natural hazards, resources, and environmental change. Two fundamental aspects of the USGS mission are to provide reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth, and to minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters. To serve this mission, the Center is developing a predictive capability for ocean circulation and sediment transport in a wide range of marine and coastal environments. The Center develops, tests, and maintains the Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST) modeling system for use in studies of coastal systems, and distributes it openly to national and international users.
The scientific programmer's duties fall into three areas: the support and development of scientific algorithms and applications of numerical models, the development and operation of a portal to disseminate model results and observational data, and the daily operation of an ocean and sediment transport forecast model and distribution of its results.
The contractor will work with Center staff to:
- Develop and integrate numerical algorithms into oceanographic, sediment, and wave models as part of the COAWST system.
- Test the algorithm implementations using both idealized test cases and realistic applications.
- Document the code.
- Use an online data portal to manage the dissemination and visualization of both model data and field observations.
- Manage, operate, and store and disseminate data from a daily numerical forecast system, using the COAWST model.
- Maintain the data dissemination server.
- Plan, coordinate, and assist in conducting numerical experiments for regional applications.
- Develop tools to compare observational data to numerical modeling results. Evaluate data for integrity, process data for analysis, display, archive, and test hypotheses.
- Provide general technical services and expertise to scientists, engineers, and technicians working on field and modeling studies of coastal and marine geology.
The Scientific Programmer must have:
- Extensive FORTRAN and Matlab experience. Experience with Python, perl, Java, and html5 is desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to develop numerical algorithms and to incorporate them into model systems.
- Experience providing server support for Thematic Real-time Environmental Distributed Data Programmer (THREDDS) data dissemination.
- Experience and/or academic credentials in diverse areas including computer programming, numerical methods, data dissemination using CF conventions, sediment transport, physical oceanography, and ocean engineering.
- Knowledge and experience in the use of oceanographic data.
- Modeling skill and experience sufficient to understand, maintain, program, and execute numerical oceanographic models at the Center, including COAWST, Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS), and Simulating Waves Nearshore (SWAN).
- Ability to extend and modify existing techniques, and to find creative and effective solutions to varied technical problems.
- Excellent written communication skills, with experience in technical writing.
- The ability to obtain a security clearance, and to pass drug testing.
