Postdoctoral Scholar Position—Ocean Modeling/Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

The California Institute of Technology Postdoctoral Scholars Program at JPL invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar position at the Ocean Circulation Group.

The research will focus on studying ocean-earth interactions and developing a multi-scale ocean circulation model as part of NASA’s MAP (Modeling, Analysis and Prediction) program. Analyzing satellite data (ocean-bottom-pressure, sea-level, winds, etc) and model results is necessary. However, the specific scientific focus of these activities will depend on the qualifications and interests of the incumbent.

Dr. Tony Song, Research Scientist, in JPL’s Earth Science Section will serve as JPL postdoctoral advisor to the selected candidate. The appointee will be guided by the JPL advisor to ensure that the research work will result in publications in the open literature.

Applicants should have a recent Ph.D. in oceanography, applied mathematics, computational fluid dynamics, or a related field. Skills in Unix/Linux and parallel computing are essential. Prior experience with a community user model, such as MICOM, POM or ROMS, is a plus. Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English is also required.

The appointment is contingent upon evidence of completion of Ph.D. The annual starting salary for a recent doctorate is $52,000 and can vary somewhat according to the applicant’s qualifications. Postdoctoral scholar positions are awarded initially for a one-year period, and may be renewed in one-year increments for a maximum of two additional years. Interested candidates should send a resume, a statement of research interests, and a list of three references to Dr. Tony Song, M/S 300-323, Sciences Division, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, 4800 Oak Grove Drive, Pasadena, CA 91109. Email: song@pacific.jpl.nasa.gov

The California Institute of Technology and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory are Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employers. Women, minorities, veterans, and disabled persons are encouraged to apply.
