Tenure Track Opportunity at The University of Southern Mississippi – Dept. of Marine Science

Physical Oceanography

The University of Southern Mississippi invites applicants for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty position as an assistant professor of physical oceanography in the Department of Marine Science at the Stennis Space Center to begin in fall 2014. The successful candidate is expected to conduct an active research program and develop courses for an interdisciplinary academic program for graduate and undergraduate students. The position offers opportunities to collaborate with biological and geological oceanographers, marine chemists, ocean modelers and hydrographers to address complex oceanographic problems. Applicants must hold an earned Ph.D. in physical oceanography or a closely related field from an accredited university at the time of appointment and have demonstrated relevant research experience. Post-doctoral experience is desirable. The successful candidate must also demonstrate a commitment to collaborative research and teaching. The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Marine Science is home to an interdisciplinary program of graduate and undergraduate study and research in marine environments. The department offers a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science and Ph.D. in marine science and a Master of Science in hydrographic science. Located at the Stennis Space Center (SSC), the Department of Marine Science is strategically situated at the single largest concentration of oceanographers and hydrographers in the world. Sixteen onsite faculty conduct research and teach courses in biological oceanography, marine chemistry, geological oceanography, physical oceanography, remote sensing, numerical modeling and hydrography to approximately 50 full-time graduate students at SSC and approximately 30 undergraduates at the USM’s Gulf Coast campus. Faculty also interact with research scientists at government agencies co-located on site including the Naval Research Laboratory, the Naval Oceanographic Office, EPA, NOAA, USGS and NASA.
