Environmental Analyst -- Philadelphia Water Department

#1 Unread post by pwd1 »

We are seeking to fill an environmental analyst position in the fields of observational physical oceanography and receiving water quality. The position we seek to fill is suitable for a candidate who has completed an MS or PhD in oceanography, or a closely related field, with an emphasis on the analysis and presentation of analytical results for tides and currents, or who has 5 years of work experience in physical oceanographic data analyses, and who is looking for a full time salaried position in an innovative and intellectually invigorating applied research environment. The candidate selected to fill this position will join a consulting team supporting the hydrodynamic and water quality modeling staff at the Philadelphia Water Department. The hydrodynamic and water quality group conducts stream and estuarine hydrodynamic and biogeochemical data collection, analysis and numerical modeling activities in support of the Department’s mission to deliver science and technology leadership in watershed and water body restoration and protection, and to assist the Department in fulfilling its obligations in meeting environmental regulatory requirements.

This position is well suited for candidates who are comfortable with conducting extensive data manipulations and transformations, statistical and graphical analyses, and especially time-series analyses. In addition, the candidate will be expected to work with the team in preparing environmental data for numerical model development, and in developing and applying innovative approaches to analyzing and displaying model results. The work is intellectually stimulating and is conducted in an atmosphere of mutual support that celebrates innovation.

In addition to our current focus on hydrodynamics and circulation, over the coming months the focus will expand to include a stronger emphasis on biogeochemical analyses, including bacteria, nutrients, phytoplankton, zooplankton, detritus and dissolved oxygen modeling in both fluvial and estuarine receiving waters. The candidate selected for this position also will be afforded opportunities to assist in the conduct of analyses in these areas of applied research.

The successful candidate will possess experience in data analyses performed in a MATLAB environment, or demonstrate the ability to readily move into working within that environment. Previous coursework in physical estuarine science or ocean engineering, in frequency-domain time series analyses, and in general biogeochemical marine studies, are highly desirable. The job site is in center City, Philadelphia. Salary is competitive and commensurate with education and experience.

Successful applicants must be able to prove their identity and their right to work in the United States. Foreign nationals must show a valid green card.

Interested candidates should send a current curriculum vitae via email to the Search Coordinator at SMULLENJT@CDMSMITH.COM.
