Postdoc opportunity at ODU - Antarctic regional models

#1 Unread post by jklinck »

POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE - #12035

Post-doctoral Research Associate in Physical Oceanography. The Center
for Coastal Physical Oceanography, Old Dominion University has four
ongoing NSF-funded projects (Co-PIs: J. Klinck, M. Dinniman and
E. Hofmann) focused on various aspects of interactions between the
atmosphere, ocean and cryosphere of the Southern Ocean with a focus on
Antarctic coastal and continental shelf systems. This postdoctoral
position is associated with these projects and involves the use of
regional ocean circulation, sea ice and ice shelf models to analyze
the influence of changing surface forcing and the importance of
meso-scale dynamics on ocean circulation and glacial melt. An
important aspect of this effort is the comparison of observations to
model simulations. Specific projects will depend on the interest and
expertise of the person hired. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in
marine science or equivalent; must have experience with multi-cpu
computer systems and languages, numerical circulation modeling (ROMS
experience desirable), quantitative data analysis methods, knowledge
of physical oceanography of high latitude systems, and experience with
scientific writing. The applicant is expected to prepare research
results for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, make
presentations at national and international scientific meetings, and
attend project-related workshops. The successful candidate will work
within an active research group pursuing several research topics in
ocean processes around Antarctica. The initial appointment is for one
year with a possible renewal for a second year, pending satisfactory
review of each year’s results.

Consideration of applicants will begin on September 17, 2012 and will
continue until the position is filled. Send resume, a summary of
Ph.D. dissertation research, a statement of research goals, and the
names and contact information for three references to the Old Dominion
University Research Foundation, P.O. Box 6369, Norfolk, VA 23508 or by
email to odurfjobs@odu.edu. Specify Job #12035. AA/EOE
