Post-Doc Position - Ocean Modeling/Prediction (NRL)

#1 Unread post by aneeshcs »

Post-doc Position
Ocean Modeling/Prediction
Naval Research Laboratory Stennis Space Center, Mississippi
The Naval Research Laboratory at Stennis Space Center, MS (NRL-SSC) is seeking applications for
postdoctoral candidates in physical oceanography to expand our understanding of ocean dynamics important for
increasing the forecast capabilities of the Navy’s state-of-the-art ocean prediction system. The focus will be on
investigating the dynamical processes that control the mean and variability of the Kuroshio and Ryukyu
Current in the western Pacific Ocean.
In particular, this research involves exploring the nature of flow exchanges taking place across multiple
passages in the Ryukyu Island chain, and identifying the mechanisms controlling such exchanges, among other
topics related to these western boundary currents. This challenging work requires a broad understanding of
physical oceanography and numerical ocean modeling. Global and basin-scale versions of the HYbrid
Coordinate Ocean Model will be utilized extensively, so experience with HYCOM would be beneficial.
NRL-SSC provides an opportunity to work with a large group of highly skilled and internationally recognized
physical oceanography researchers and access to supercomputing and general computational resources in
addition to extensive historical and real-time regional and global data sources. To learn more about the Ocean
Dynamics and Prediction branch’s other research projects, visit http://www7320.nrlssc.navy.mil/projects.php
A postdoc will be hired with stipends of ~$73,000 through the National Research Council Research
Associateship Programs (http://sites.nationalacademies.org/pga/rap) or American Society for Engineering
Education Naval Postdoctoral Programs (www.asee.org/nrl). Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent
resident at time of application. NRL is an equal opportunity employer.
Inquires about the position should be made directly to:
