Postdoc position at LOCEAN (Paris)

#1 Unread post by capet »

Our current view of the Southern Ocean functioning largely incorporates mesoscale processes. On the other hand we are still lacking a clear understanding of the role played by turbulence at finer submeso-scale. With some degree of idealization and access to modern supercomputers this issue can now be tackled numerically. This is the goal of the ANR-funded project SMOC that involves researchers at Laboratoire d'Océanographie et du Climat (LOCEAN - Paris) and Laboratoire de Physique des Océans (LPO - Brest).

We are seeking candidates for one 18-24 months postdoctoral position based in Paris (Université Pierre et Marie Curie). The successful applicant will work closely with Dr. Xavier Capet and be in charge of running/analyzing high resolution Primitive-Equation simulations. He/She should have a PhD in Physical Oceanography with some computing experience (fortran - linux environment). Experience with the PE models NEMO or ROMS is a plus but not a requirement. Collaborations with other french/international groups will be encouraged, with travel funds available for this. Interactions with observational/biogeochemical oceanographers at LOCEAN, LPO or elsewhere will also be encouraged.

Salary will be commensurate with experience. The starting date is flexible between April and September 2012. Applications will be considered until the position is filled. Applications (or requests for additional information) should be sent to X. Capet (xclod@locean-ipsl.upmc.fr) and include a statement of interest, a CV with list of publications, and two information contacts for recommendations. Individuals from under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
