Research fellowships for PhD students at the IEO - Spain

#1 Unread post by rleal »

The Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO, http://www.ieo.es) has opened 11 research fellowships for PhD students. IEO is a large public marine research institution with 9 research laboratories in Spain. The IEO has a wide expertise in the fields of physical and chemical oceanography and marine ecology, with a mainly observational approach. It also has long experience in a wide range of ocean surveys and international experiments. The IEO has currently more than 600 employees, including approximately 300 scientists, 200 research technicians, 80 advisory government officials, and 20 graduate students, with an annual budget of more than €60 millions. It currently participates in about 150 projects, 20 of which are EU-funded. IEO owns a fleet of oceanographic research vessels and well equipped shore-based laboratories. Scientists in the IEO are also official Spanish representatives or members of the IEO delegation in most of the international oceanographic organizations and programs.

Fellowship number 10 "The Mediterranean outflow in the Gulf of Cadiz: transformation, evolution and coupling with central waters" aims at studying the transformations experienced by the Mediterranean outflow waters (MOW) after leaving the Strait of Gibraltar and cascading off the Spartel sill into the Gulf of Cadiz, and examine the vertical coupling with the overlying central waters. In detail, the research will study the evolution of the MOW veins, their paths and early transformations, estimation of mass, momentum and salt budgets as well as mixing and subinertial processes. These works are bond to the currently ongoing STOCA, INGRES3 and PESCADIZ research projects. The candidate will collect and analyze observations and implement and utilize process models or regional numerical models to extend the value of the observations.

Applicants must have achieved a degree related with physical oceanography, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, marine sciences or equivalent. Experience in the collection, processing and analysis of observational data together with experience in numerical modeling of ocean processes is required. Applicants with good knowledge of physical processes in the ocean, experience in sea-going cruises and skills in fortran/matlab/python programming is an advantage. The fellow will participate in the design and realization of oceanographic cruises.

Application and administrative details are published on http://www.boe.es/diario_boe/txt.php?id ... 2011-17384 (in Spanish only). Deadline is November 24.
