UCAR Visiting Scientist Appointment at University of North Carolina

Application Deadline: 30 September 2005

The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), cooperating with the NOAA National Ocean Service, is seeking a research scientist for a multi-disciplinary, multi-agency scientific team to simulate and study the effects of Sea Level Rise (SLR) on coastal processes of the Pamlico Basin, North Carolina. This is a new NOAA initiative to develop an integrated ecosystem-based management approach for evaluating coastal response to SLR throughout the United States. This position will interact with four groups who are studying (i) the influence of SLR (and its associated changes in water level, wave conditions, sediment resuspension, light attenuation, salinity, etc) on shoreline position, sub-tidal submerged aquatic vegetation habitat, inter-tidal oyster and marsh habitat and supra-tidal maritime forest habitat and (ii) the potential effects of management actions such as shoreline hardening on the response to SLR. As a part of these studies, several component models are being developed that include a spatially explicit hydrodynamic circulation model and localized, habitat-specific ecological models.

The individual selected for this position will integrate all the sub-models, including (a) creating/adapting a three dimensional GIS based landscape model for the land and water areas of the Pamlico Basin, (b) incorporating the two-dimensional habitat simulation model into the landscape model, (c) incorporating the one- or two-dimensional marsh simulation model into the landscape model, and (d) incorporating the shoreline change relationship into the landscape model.

Qualifications include a background in Geography, Geology, Marine Sciences or a related field with specialization in developing landscape models using geographic information systems, relational databases and programming languages such as FORTRAN, C, or C++. A Ph.D. is preferred although individuals with an M.S. and strong experience will be considered.

This position will be based in Morehead City, NC, at the UNC's Institute of Marine Sciences, and will require travel to the other participating institutions (East Carolina University, University of South Carolina, and the NOAA Coast Survey Development Laboratory and the Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research in Silver Spring, MD). The position is currently funded for 3-years, but is expected to be renewed and expanded if this project is successful.

The selected scientist will receive a salary commensurate with education and experience. Benefits include health and dental insurance, paid time off (PTO), paid holidays, mandatory participation in a retirement fund (TIAA/CREF), and life insurance.

Application deadline is 30 September 2005
