UCAR hydrodynamic ensemble modeling position

#1 Unread post by kate »

UCAR hydrodynamic ensemble modeling position in NOAA/NOS's Coast Survery Development Laboratory

First consideration will be given to applications received before 31 October 2010, but will remain open until filled.

The UCAR Visiting Scientist Programs in cooperation with NOAA’s Coast Survey Development Laboratory (CSDL) is seeking applications for a hydrodynamic modeling position. The successful candidate will participate in projects to develop and apply hydrodynamic models to address coastal inundation. This includes the application and development of tools to evaluate model output including visualization and statistical measures of quality. The candidate will then develop techniques to generate ensemble model products from both multiple simulations of a single model, and simulations from multiple models. Experience in numerical hydrodynamic water circulation modeling is required; in particular, experience in simulation of water level and inundation (including tidal, storm surge, and sea level rise processes) is highly desirable. Furthermore, expertise in statistical analysis and model ensembling is desired. Experience in transition and supporting models and products within operational systems and/or high performance computing platforms would be beneficial.

A well-qualified applicant should have experience developing and analyzing model applications of hydrodynamic models for coastal regions driven by water level and meteorological forcing. The candidate will participate in the development and evaluation of models and model ensembles of coastal storm surge inundation. This could include models used both in federal operational systems and in research and development efforts. As a part of these studies, the candidate will need to show strong personal initiative to lead the project and communicate with a broad, cross-cutting team in addition to technical competence to apply appropriate techniques. The candidate will be working with offices from across NOAA, including laboratories and operational centers within the National Weather Service (e.g. Meteorological Development Laboratory; National Centers for Environmental Prediction; National Hurricane Center) and the National Ocean Service (e.g., Coast Survey Development Laboratory; Coastal Services Center).

This position is with the Marine Modeling and Analysis Programs branch of CSDL in Silver Spring, Maryland. It is a two-year appointment based upon continued funding and satisfactory performance. The applicant will use a variety of existing programs and software and will develop new Unix, Linux, Fortran, C, and/or MATLAB software to handle unique problems. Work will be performed both by working alone and as a member of a team, using PCs, workstation computers, and high performance computers. Results will be written up in technical publications and presented at scientific meetings and workshops.

Education: Applicants should have a Master’s or preferably a Ph.D. degree in ocean science, earth science, or a related field.

Visitors to CSDL will be employees of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and subject to and covered by UCAR policies with respect to all personnel matters. The selected candidate will receive a fixed annual salary. The excellent benefits include health and dental insurance, sick and annual leave, paid holidays, mandatory participation in a retirement fund (TIAA/CREF), and life insurance.

Application deadline: The review process will begin on 31 October 2010 and will remain open until filled.
