Postdoctoral Researcher

#1 Unread post by robertson »

TITLE: Postdoctoral Researcher. The College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS) at Oregon State University (OSU) invites applications for a full-time, fixed term, Research Associate (Postdoctoral) position.

SALARY: $40,000-$41,000

APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: 6 October 2003

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will perform research leading to the development of a climatology of radiative fluxes at the ocean surface, derived from combinations of multispectral satellite imagery data: AVHRR, GOES, and MODIS, and from ERBE and CERES Earth radiation budget data. These radiative fluxes will be verified with in situ shipboard radiometry data. The initial region of interest is the California Current, with an initial emphasis on the U.S. GLOBEC study region off Oregon. Later extensions will be to other coastal regions of the U.S. The work entails studies of the physical processes linking the multispectral radiances from the imagers to the radiative fluxes as deduced with ERBE and CERES radiances, vicarious calibration of the imagery data, the development of methods for extending the satellite observations to time-averaged, geographical surface fluxes, assessments of the quality of the shipboard radiometry data, and assessments of the satellite derived fluxes through comparison with the shipboard data. The postdoc will work within the recently established Cooperative Institute for Oceanographic Satellite Studies (CIOSS).

QUALIFICATIONS:
Recent Ph.D. in physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, or related physical sciences, with emphasis on atmospheric radiation and clouds. Statistical analysis of large-volume satellite data sets, verified by in situ radiometer time series; proficiency in spoken and written English, with demonstrated ability to complete and publish results; proficiency in programming (Fortran, IDL, and/or Matlab) within a UNIX environment; demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity is preferred.

TO APPLY: Send statement of scientific interest, curriculum vitae, and names, addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of three references to:
