SALARY: $42,000

APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: 15 September 2003

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct research involving the application of numerical models and data assimilation systems to studies of physical oceanographic circulation processes in the coastal transition zone (CTZ) off Oregon and northern California. The CTZ includes flows over the continental shelf and slope and in the adjacent ocean interior. The successful applicant will work with J. S. Allen, G. D. Egbert, P. M. Kosro, and R. N. Miller on the development and application of data assimilation methods for ocean surface current measurements obtained from shore-based long range H-F radar systems and altimeter measurements from satellites. Scientific objectives include achieving a better understanding of shelf, slope, and interior flow interactions and exchange processes.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ph.D. in one of the following fields: physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, engineering, physics or mathematics.
  • Experience in theoretical and/or numerical modeling studies of fluid mechanics problems and a strong background in applied mathematics.
  • Experience with data assimilation methods and with the dynamical interpretation of oceanographic or atmospheric data is desirable.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Preferred qualifications include a demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
TO APPLY: A statement of interest, curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference should be sent to:

Prof. John S. Allen
