Hydrodynamic Modeler and Programmer

Hydrodynamic modeling is critical to a suite of marine applications in NOAA’s National Ocean Service (NOS) related to safe and efficient navigation, to emergency response, and to environmentally sound use and management of coastal resources in U.S. ports, estuaries and coastal waters. NOS’ Coast Survey Development Laboratory has a full time (civil service; must be a U.S. citizen) position for a hydrodynamic modeler & scientific programmer in Silver Spring, MD. The candidate will enable effective development and transition to operations of hydrodynamic models including such projects as the design and standardization of software infrastructures, modeling numerics, gridding techniques and model coupling technology. He/she will be expected to participate in community modeling efforts with other NOS and NOAA program offices, other federal, local, and state governments, academia and the private sector aimed at establishing a standardized modeling infrastructure. He/she will develop and implement approaches and tools for model transition from research to operations and will also be expected to develop and apply methodologies for linking physical models to biogeochemical models for ecological applications. In addition, he/she will be involved in the continuing development of statistical and graphical tools to be used to evaluate the quality of physical and biogeochemical models. The candidate will be required to communicate research and development results with the national and international oceanographic science community.

Minimum qualifications include a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master of Science degree in marine sciences, engineering, applied mathematics, scientific programming or related fields. Experience in hydrodynamics, estuarine and coastal ocean modeling, oceanographic data and time series analysis, or knowledge of geophysical fluid dynamic theory is required. Fluency in UNIX/LINUX operating systems, shell scripting, FORTRAN, and MATLAB, NCL or IDL is necessary, with expertise in C desirable. Experience in scientific visualization and animation is necessary. The ability to lead and work well in a project team-oriented environment and strong oral and written communication skills are necessary. Familiarity with biogeochemical modeling and model coupling methodologies is valuable.
