Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Portland State University

Position Summary:
The Portland State University (PSU) Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science, has a diverse and growing program in Environmental Fluid Mechanics. We have an immediate opening for an individual with a PhD in physics, ocean engineering, physical oceanography or related discipline, who is interested in coastal and ocean tides, coastal circulation, stratified flows, or buoyant plume processes. The successful candidate will participate in a National Science Foundation funded, four-year program that seeks to discern the causes of evolving tidal amplitudes in the Pacific Ocean. Duties will include data analysis, numerical modeling, and publication. A mentorship program will ensure involvement in all aspects of the project, and provide assistance in preparing publications and proposals, and in formulation of a successful career path. There will also be opportunities to participate in other funded research. The candidate must possess a pertinent PhD degree, a strong background in math, physics, computer programming, organizational skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience in organization of field programs is desirable. Overnight travel, field work, and sea time may be required.

Key Responsibilities:
Statistical analysis of water level and other time series data
Numerical modeling to understand causes and consequences of tidal changes
Publication of research results, and participation in scientific conferences

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:
PhD in Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, or related discipline
Excellent time-management and communication skills
Ability to program in Fortran, C, Matlab, or other languages in support of statistical analysis and modeling studies

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in organization or execution of field programs
Experience with a numerical model (ROMS, POM, MITgcm), netcdf, OpenDAP, etc.

The starting annual 1.0 FTE salary rate for this position will be between $50,000 and $60,000 dependent upon qualifications and experience with an excellent benefits package including fully paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or one dependent at any of the Oregon University System schools.
