2 post-docs at UW

#1 Unread post by babsona »

School of Oceanography, University of Washington has two immediate postdoctoral openings for coastal/estuarine modelers. Both positions are one-year appointments with optional second year renewal.

The first position, jointly funded by Northwest Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Program, is for development of a predictive model of circulation and marine ecosystem for Hood Canal, Washington, with the goal of understanding factors that influence the canal's hypoxic condition and developing expertise to advice on the effectiveness of proposed remedial actions. This project will use Rutgers Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS); responsibilities include development of an oxygen module for the ROMS ecosystem component. Background in marine biogeochemistry in addition to estuarine dynamics would be desirable for this position.

The second position, funded by National Oceanographic Partnership Program, is for development of a dynamical model of linkage between Washington coastal waters, Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound, with the goal of understanding processes that influence the circulation and ventilation of inland marine waters of Washington State at different time scales. This position is more research oriented, including opportunities for analytical work and idealized numerical modeling. Background in marine hydrodynamics or geophysical fluid dynamics would be appropriate for this position.

Requirements for both positions are experience in hydrodynamical modeling of marine waters, and familiarity with Fortran 95, Matlab and Unix/Mac OS X systems. Experience with parallel computing will be very helpful.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a thesis abstract and names of two referees to: Dr. Mitsuhiro Kawase, School of Oceanography, University of Washington, Box 355351, Seattle WA 98195. Applications can be sent electronically to kawase@ocean.washington.edu. Inquiries about the positions should be directed to Dr. Kawase as well.
