NSF-funded summer student projects in Zanzibar

#1 Unread post by jtheiss »

Dear all,

As promised in my previous post on September 9 with the same subject, the Zanzibar Project has now a web site at

http://www.ZanzibarProject.org.

If you missed the previous post, here is again a description of the student opportunities:

National Science Foundation funding is available for three years to support undergraduate and graduate students in the US to gain international research experience in coastal physical oceanography at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Zanzibar, Tanzania, for two months during the summers.

Students can choose to participate in either 2009, 2010, or 2011 and between two types of projects: 1) Further developing a coastal model of the dynamics of the Zanzibar Channel using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) and 2) Making measurements in the Zanzibar Channel using an ADCP and a CTD. The projects will be supervised by local scientists and Dr. Javier Zavala-Garay at Rutgers University, who will be with the students in Zanzibar.

The Zanzibar Project is supported by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, several US universities, and many individuals. Please send a brief email to me at j.theiss@theissresearch.org if you are interested.

All the best,

Jurgen
