Re: ROMS kinetic energy and other problems

Below are the CPP options that I used for the 2004 Global Roms, but 1st let me suggest a perhaps easier alternative for your southern boundary. Why not extending your southern bdry to Antarctica and using EW_PERIODIC in the east-west direction for the ACC? that has been sucessfully done in the past ...

Re: ROMS kinetic energy and other problems

I found an old hard drive where I **might** have the original cpp.h file. I will post/send it later tonight. Your cpp.h has some non-standard choices. Are you using tidal forcing?

Re: ROMS Global Solution

For a Pacific domain, 3-4 years should be enough to get the main features of the upper 400-500 m of the ocean. Could you upload some figures? but not here (i.e., ROMS Results), open a new topic in "ROMS Problems" instead. Guillermo.

Re: ROMS Global Solution

This run was done more than 6 years ago. I don't keep the CPP file but you will be able to find some info in Auad (2008), GRL. I'll be happy to take a look at your results. Best, Guillermo.

Re: Can VISC2 be scaled by depth?

BAN, you will need to do some coding but technically, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. I envision 2 ways, a) one is by modifiying the code where Hernan dealt with the variable grid size and viscosity, and perhaps importing the bottom topography if that variable is not currently included in t...

mpich2 (vs. 1) and periodic boundary conditions

running roms on a grid with e-w periodic boundary conditions and compilation done with mpich1 works fine (32-bit). when I compile it using mpich2 (and 64 bit, on another cluster), it generates negative salinities in two spots. I ran it on yet another cluster (64 bit) without problem. Anyone had this...

Re: Rivers/Sinks

Thank you Kate,

I haven't read anywhere that the source/sink needs to be against the wall/coastline. I need to place a source/sink in the open i.e., with neighboring grid cells being all wet ones. thx once more.

Rivers/Sinks

when defining UV_Psource, what parameter defines if it's a source or a sink? the sign of the vertically mass transport? positive for rivers, negative for sinks?

thx a lot. :)

mpi, intel compiler and libraries

I don't have "Intel Mpi". Do I need it to compile ROMS, or the libraries contained in ROMS/LIBS/MCT should do the job?

Any other tips related to mpi compilation with the Intel compiler are more than welcome

thx

I used a wall at 80N - depending what you are looking at, it might be ok. running ROMS on a laptop (Linux + ifort + Duo Centrino)

Afer some reasonable troubles, I managed to compile and run ROMS on my Dell laptop. This was with Linux Red Hat Enterprise Advanced Server 4, the intel compiler 9.1, only one supporting, as of May 2006, the Intel Centrino Duo (dual core) processor. Most important. The intel fortran compiler for linu...

Re

got it.

If one uses the PG linux86 compiler (on the opteron server) you get similar results but not quite what it should be.

So, things worked when I compiled with the PG linux86-64 compiler (opteron is 32-64bit).

same model & compiler + different CPUs = differ. solutio

I ran the same code with identical initial conditions, grid and forcing etc (compiled both with 32bit PG compiler). The model's kinetic energy is not the same. In the dual Xeon the model's kinetic energy/volume is 0.000001 units smaller than in a quad Opteron, i.e., only difference is the type of pr...

Below you may find results from a global ROMS simulation with climatological forcing started from rest. After 12 years spin-up, all main ocean currents are noticeable. Even at depth the Equatorial counter-current is seen flowing eastward. These results/grid/forcing etc are from an early spin-up test...

Variable Viscosity (wrt VISC_GRID)

When using a variable-resolution grid, ROMS offers the advantage of making the viscosity (and diffusivity) coefficients proportional to the grid size (user specifies coefficient for the coarsest grid point, then by %define VISC_GRID in cppdefs.h, ROMS computes the visc coeff for the rest of the gri...
