Re: Problems with MPI and inlet_test

Perhaps this is explained elsewhere on the ROMS forum, but I'm not sure that it is possible to run a program on 1 core of a dual core processor. How do you know that you are not already using both cores?

Could someone more knowledgeable about these kinds of issues clarify this?

Re: Sock news

So, which sock design is yours? If not featured on the webpage, can we have a photo?? :)

Horizontal viscosity/diffusivity

I also have the Smagorinsky eddy viscosity/diffusivity on my wish list.

Re: how to use roms plot package?

If there is no separate grid file, you should set the main output file ocean_his.nc as the grid file in cnt.in. Set all of the top, bottom, left and right map coordinates to zero to plot the full horizontal domain. It is difficult to know exactly what your problem is without seeing the whole of your...

Re: how to use roms plot package?

Hi,

There should also be sample input files for each program, named cnt.in, csec.in etc.

Edit the appropriate input file and if you are using Unix/Linux, you can run the executable with input from the .in file using the command

cnt < cnt.in

or similar.

Bottom Velocities

Hi,

In a 3D application with quadratic bottom friction what do the velocities at the lowest level in the model represent?

Are they a shear velocity (u*) or the velocity at the top of an assumed constant stress bottom boundary layer or something different?

cheers,
Deborah

LAB_CANYON Example

Hi,

Does anyone have a reference for the LAB_CANYON example problem, in particular how is the additional centripetal acceleration being added in?

thanks,
Deborah

Re: rst problems

Hi Amanda, Yes, I found the same problem when I first tried restarting with v2.2. There seems to have been a slight change in the logic compared to v2.1. Before restarting with v2.2, you need to undefine any CPP variables which set the initial values analytically (eg. ANA_INITIAL ) and recompile. Ot...

I am using ROMS to model shallow water (generally < 30-50m) island and headland wakes, with both idealised and real bathymetry. Most of my work to date has been for unstratified flows. The resulting flows are highly three-dimensional with significant upwelling and downwelling as a result of interact...

Re: Problem with vertical velocities at tile boundaries

After a bit more checking, I think my problem was caused by some side sponge layers I had inadvertently left in from a previous (single tile) run. When I had more than one tile in the I-direction they were being applied at the sides of every tile. Sorry about that! I guess it shows there is a...

Problem with vertical velocities at tile boundaries

Running ROMS 2.2 in 3D with MPI and partitioning in the I-direction, I get significant discontinuities in the vertical velocities at the tile boundaries.

The problem disappears if the model is tiled only in the J-direction.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I realise that there is a lot of work going on, so not being impatient but just wanted to clarify - the comment above refers to nested as well as coupled grids? ie. Nested grids are not yet functional?

No slip vs. free slip around masked land areas

Just wondering whether I should expect much difference in the results around masked land areas using no slip ( gamma2=-1 ) as opposed to free slip ( gamma2=1 ) boundaries. For a 2D test case - a 1km diameter cylindrical island in 100m water depth with uniform 50m grid spacing in a channel with a nor...

Thanks Hernan, found the matlab scripts. Maybe I am missing something obvious, but if I set theta_b=1 I can only get increased resolution at both the bottom (where I do need it) and the surface (where I don't). I could just modify the existing function to get the kind of vertical coordinate distribu...

Re: Stretching parameters - vertical coordinates

In my current application of the model, I am not applying a surface wind stress and would sometimes like more resolution in the bottom boundary layer, but not at the surface. Using theta_s and theta_b it seems possible to increase the resolution at the surface only or at both surface and bottom. Is ...
