Re: Consumer-grade desktop for toy-"operational" model running 24/7?

Hi Stef, The other significant cost to consider with a cloud provider or hardware rental is the data egress. I tried to price this out for a project last year, and the cost of moving the data around for analysis was quite significant. To estimate the price depends on having a rather detailed model f...

Re: Appropriate open boundary conditions for tidal forcing

Hi Guangyu, If you have the time to run a test from an idealized initial condition, it might illustrate the performance of the boundary conditions. If you designed an idealized initial condition (and matching open boundary conditions) with, say, a large eddy centered on the midpoint of one boundary,...

Re: what are the meanings of adjoint model's input and outpu

Hi Li, Suppose you are interested in a linear function of the model's trajectory. Let the value of this function be denoted, y. Then there exists another function, call it K(x,t), which permits you to compute y using an inner product: y = \int_D \int_0^T K(x,t) u(x,t) dx dt. The model's trajectory i...

Re: Will it be convenient (in the long run) to use Windows?

I assume this is a sincere question, rather than trolling to start a flame-war. Once you get over the modest (but never-ending) learning curve, you will find so much better tools are available in the native linux world. Your path will be easier if you bite the bullet and buy a decent book on linux s...

Re: ROMS not bit-reproducible: northern boundary?

There is some literature on maintaining bit-reproducible simulations under MPI, e.g.,
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/ar ... 9114000507

While the lack of bit-level reproducibility is annoying, hopefully the divergence of solutions is not physically significant.

Announcement: Modeling and Observing the Tides in the Ocean

Jim Richman, Richard Ray, Patrick Cummins and I have proposed a session #2250 on Modeling and Observing the Tides in the Ocean at the 2014 Fall AGU Meeting in San Francisco. I invite you to consider submitting an abstract to this session. The session summary is: A resurgence of interest in ocean tid...

Re: tidal analysis of large output files

Hi Hashemi, If you are comfortable modifying the ROMS code, it is not too difficult to do the harmonic analysis during the run. The steps are more-or-less as follows: - Select a set of tidal frequencies for analysis - Determine the duration of run needed to separate the selected frequencies - Start ...

Re: modeling internal tides in a canyon: solution not conver

Hi Shih-Nan This can be a difficult problem. So it is good you are checking out convergence. From my understanding of Shchepektin's descriptions of the numerics, the energetics of ROMS should be pretty accurate, but I think DiLorenzo is the only one to systematically verify the convergence of intern...

Alex, Thanks a lot for writing this review and taking the time to engage with the original poster. It is no small task to assemble the list of examples and history into a narrative as you have done. And I think your final take-home point is very well said. If you would consider writing a topical pie...

Re: Why I got such a different tide solution using TPXO data

Hi Stone, In addition to the other suggestions, above, you should know that the OTIS bathymetry is unlikely to yield a very good result here. There is a paper by Jan Sen that discusses the shelf resonance between China and Taiwan, and the importance of good bathymetry for modeling M2 correctly. Also...
