Travel Visa Info:

All attendees who are not Australian or New Zealand citizens, are required to hold a valid visa to travel to Australia. There are several types of visa's available depending on your country of origin. We suggest using Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship's Visa Wizard tool to determine what type of visa is best for you.

Hotel Info:

A list of recommended hotels near the workshop is given below. North Sydney is a bit further from the workshop venue but there is a larger number and range of accommodation options, including those listed below. It may also be possible to obtain discounted rates at some hotels in the North Sydney area by making a last-minute booking through websites such as www.hotelclub.com.au or www.wotif.com.au.

If you wish to stay at one of the hotels nearer to the workshop it is however recommended that you book early.

It would also be possible to stay in the city center (south side of the harbor) where there are numerous hotels but this is not recommended because of the increased travel times to the workshop.

Getting to the Workshop:

The ROMS Workshop will be held at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) from Tuesday 31 March to Friday 3 April.

Some information on parking and getting around by public transport is given below. The 244 and 228 bus routes go to SIMS from Monday to Friday and can be used to travel to and from the recommended hotels (hotel 2 requires an additional bus, see the notes below).

Getting to UNSW from Sydney Airport:

Car/Taxi Info:

UNSW is approximately 10km by road from Sydney Airport. Fees apply for on-campus parking which is sometimes in limited supply. The nearest vehicle entry point is Gate 14 on Barker Street. Casual parking is available on the top level of the Barker Street carpark. Alternate parking may also be available in the Botany Street carpark (enter the University from Gate 11 on Botany Street).

Bus Info:

Take the 400 bus from Sydney Airport, alight at the bus stop opposite UNSW near the intersection of Day Avenue with Anzac Parade. Additional information on getting to UNSW by bus is available here

Getting to SIMS from Sydney Airport:

Car/Taxi Info:

SIMS is approximately 22km by road from Sydney Airport. It is located near the end of Chowder Bay Road, where a limited amount of free parking is available. Additional parking is available in the nearby Clifton Gardens Reserve parking area, which is accessible via Morella Road, Clifton Gardens. Council parking fees apply here and you will need to walk across the park and beach to get to SIMS.

Train/Bus Info:

The Workshop venue can be reached from Sydney Airport using a combination of train and bus. Take the train from Sydney Airport to Wynyard station. At Wynyard station, take the lift up to street level (Carrington Street) where you can catch the 244 bus from Stand A directly to SIMS. Allow approx 90 minutes total travel time from the airport.

Getting to the recommended hotels from Sydney Airport:

Car/Taxi Info:

The recommended hotels are 15-20km by road from Sydney Airport. Check with the hotel concerned regarding parking availability.

Train/Bus/Ferry Info:

The suggested hotels in the North Sydney area (hotels 4, 5, 6 and 7) can all be reached from Sydney Airport by train. Take the train from Sydney Airport to Wynyard Station, where you will need to change trains for the North Shore line to get to either North Sydney station (hotels 5 and 6) or Milsons Point station (hotels 4 and 7). Hotel 5 is close to North Sydney station while Hotel 6 is a 10 minute walk from the station. Hotel 4 is close to Milsons Point station while Hotel 7 is a 10-15 minute walk from the station.

Hotels 1 and 3 can be reached from Sydney Airport by train and bus. Take the train from Sydney Airport to Wynyard station. At Wynyard station, take the lift up to street level (Carrington Street) where you can catch the 244 or 247 buses from Stand A. The 244 and 247 buses stop near both of these hotels.

Hotel 2 may be reached from Sydney Airport by train and ferry. Take the train directly from Sydney Airport to Circular Quay station. At Circular Quay, take the Mosman Ferry from Wharf No 4. Cremorne Point is a scenic 10 minute trip across the harbour. The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the Cremorne Point ferry terminal.

The 244 and 247 buses and the ferry to Cremorne Point have limited operating hours. It is recommended that you check the timetables before beginning your journey, especially if travelling early or late in the day. See here for possible alternate public transport options.

Travelling between SIMS and your hotel:

Car/Taxi Info:

SIMS is located near the end of Chowder Bay Road, Georges Heights. Limited free parking is available at SIMS.

Additional parking is available in the nearby Clifton Gardens Reserve parking area, which is accessible via Morella Road, Clifton Gardens. Council parking fees apply here and you will need to walk across the park and beach to get to SIMS.

Bus Info:

Full information about the Sydney Bus service can be found here. A map of all North Sydney bus routes can be found here. There are two bus routes available Monday - Friday:
  1. Route 244: This service is available from Wynyard Station and operates via Military Road terminating at Chowder Bay. (Timetable, Map)

    NOTE: Available timetable states that service terminates at Balmoral Naval Depot, this is incorrect service now runs to and terminates at Chowder Bay.
  2. Route 228: This service is available from Milson Point Station and runs via North Sydney Station and Military Road, terminating at Clifton Gardens Reserve. (Timetable, Map)

    NOTE: This service does terminate at the reserve opposite Chowder Bay and you are required to walk across the beach to access SIMS.

From Hotel 1, take either the 244 or 228 buses from Military Road.

From Hotel 2, take the 225 bus from Milson Road up the hill to the intersection of Spofforth Street and Military Road, cross to the opposite side of Military Road and then take either the 244 or 228 bus.

From Hotel 3, take either the 244 bus along Middle Head Road or the 228 bus along Bradleys Head Road. Alternatively, it is only a 20-25 minute walk from Hotel 3 to SIMS via Bradleys Head Road, Thompson Street, David Street and Morella Road.

From hotels 4, 5, 6 and 7 in the North Sydney area use the 228 bus.
